Alemayehu Eshete

Alemayehu Eshete

ETHIO-JAZZ SINGER
BORN 1941, IN JIMMA, ETHIOPIA
ACTIVE SINCE 1960

With over 70 years, Alemayehu Eshete belongs to the generation of Ethiopian musicians who shaped Ethiopias pop music between the 50s and 70s. But his life and work are poorly documented. This applies also to his fellow musicians like Mahmoud Ahmed (70), Bizunesh Bekele (deceased) and  Muluken Melesse ( 68). Between the 1950s and 1970s there was an enormous development in Ethiopias pop music scene. It started with military bands which produced western-style music for the first time in 1924. Over the years, the military bands developed their own different musical genres. There were no creative boundaries. Alemayehu Eshete was always one of the leading musicians of this development. His songs are nationally and internationally known, partly due to the release of the "Ethiopiques" song collection. In his music he combines tradtional Ethiopian and modern elements, like Funk, Jazz, Rock or R & B. Since the 1950s he inspires people worldwide with his social-critical and political songs on his tours. With his music he addresses music fans of all generations far across the borders of Ethiopia.
